The Riverton Police Association, in conjunction with the Riverton Borough Council, is establishing a memorial for Riverton Patrolman Thomas Whitelock who was killed in the line of duty in Riverton Borough in 1976. On January 14, 1976, Thomas C. Whitelock made the ultimate sacrifice for the residents of Riverton while answering a call for a subject who was mentally unstable. Patrolman Whitelock and Palmyra Patrolman Howard Norcross found the subject wielding a knife. After disarming the subject, Patrolman Whitelock was handcuffing him when he broke free, grabbed Patrolman Whitelock’s gun from his holster, and fired a shot at Patrolman Norcross who fell to the ground. As the subject prepared to fire the weapon again, Patrolman Whitelock forced his way between Patrolman Norcross and the subject, blocking the line of fire. The subject aimed the gun directly at Patrolman Whitelock and fired inflicting a fatal wound
We feel it is important to have a permanent remembrance in the Borough of Riverton, and we will be dedicating a plaque to honor Patrolman Whitelock's heroism at the corner of Broad and Main Streets near the gazebo on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10:00 AM. We would like to extend an invitation to all of the residents and businesses in our community to attend this service to commemorate Patrolman Whitelock.
